The Employment Standards Act sets the rules for employment practices in your office and in the field. Your current work rules may fall short of your statutory obligations even though they are well accepted by your staff or seem like standard practice. if you learn too late that you are not in compliance you may be faced with certain consequences including owing months of back pay in wages.
This 1.5-hour online seminar will give you a review of Employment Standards Act requirements that are particularly relevant to construction industry employers, including:
– Who is a “manager” and exempt from certain requirements
– Independent contractors vs. employees
– Hours of work and overtime
– Averaging agreements for hours of work
– Vacation and statutory holidays
– Paid sick days
– Job protected leaves of absence
– Termination of employment
– Impact of the common law
This session was designed for anyone in the construction industry who wants a better understanding of the Employment Standards Act.
Presenter: Jessica Thomson – Partner, Pulver Crawford Munroe LLP

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY #63: Listen to The Boss
Each week, ICBA’s Jordan Bateman reflects on what we’ve learned as we participate in ICBA’s Workplace Wellness Program. This program is free for all ICBA members – check out icba.ca/wellness for details.
There’s a great Bruce Springsteen song (aren’t they all!) called Wrecking Ball, which he played at the very final concert before they tore down Giants Stadium in New Jersey. It has a great bridge, where he sings over and over: “And hard times come, and hard times go, and hard times come, and hard times go… just to come again…”
I’ve been thinking about that song a lot during this month’s look at emotional intelligence, and how we respond to external influences. The truth is that we can’t always control whether it is good things or challenges we’re going to face, whether it is criticism or praise we’re going to draw. There’s a seasonality, a rhythm to life, that brings good times and bad.
What we can control is how we respond. Our study of emotional intelligence offers some suggestions on how to do that:
- Think on your own emotions – better understand what you’re feeling
- Ask others for their perspectives
- Be vigilant – watch for early signs of negative behaviours
- Try to find the ‘why’ – see the situation through someone else’s eyes
- Don’t get defensive when you’re criticized, but ask yourself what you can learn from it
Springsteen has openly shared about his challenges to find mental wellness, and helped others understand. Thanks to The Boss for putting into words what a lot of people around the world are feeling.

Did you know that most employees decide to leave a job within their first 18 months with an organization? When an employee does leave, it usually costs about three times their salary to replace them. You can greatly increase the likelihood that a new employee will stay with you by implementing a well-designed onboarding program that will guide the employee through their first months with the company.
This workshop will explore the benefits of onboarding, show you how to design an onboarding framework, give you ways to customize the program for different audiences, and demonstrate how to measure results from the program.
In this 2-hour session, participants will learn how to:
- Define onboarding and describe how it is different from orientation
- Identify the business benefits of onboarding
- List the factors that contribute to a successful onboarding program
- Design a framework for an onboarding program
- Customize your onboarding framework
- Identify which metrics you should track to evaluate program results
Who Should Attend?
This session would be beneficial for those in a Human Resources (HR) role or anyone that performs HR tasks within a company, as well as supervisors, managers, or safety professionals.
Presenter: Pamela Bragg is the owner of Sarkany Management Inc., a Human Resources Consulting firm, which offers a broad range of HR services.

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY #64: Pining for Perspective
Each week, ICBA’s Jordan Bateman reflects on what we’ve learned as we participate in ICBA’s Workplace Wellness Program. This program is free for all ICBA members – check out icba.ca/wellness for details.
Is there anything the Hollywood Chrises can’t do? Pratt, Pine, Hemsworth, and Evans – four Chrises who are among the most famous actors in the world.
I was pondering the idea of perspective as part of this week’s Wellness learning on Emotional Intelligence, when I came across a quote from Chris Pine: “The only thing you sometimes have control over is perspective. You don’t have control over your situation. But you have a choice about how you view it.”
You’re right, Chris Pine. Learning to shift our perspective plays a big part in our emotional intelligence. Here are three tips that can help:
- Seek different points of view. I can tell you that my wife often has a much healthier and broader view of a challenge I’m wrestling with than I do…
- Ask more questions. Listen to what others have to say, and ask them how they see the world.
- Spend time with new people. This can be a challenge for the introverted among us, but learning new perspectives from new people can change our own views.
Or, as Chris Pine has also said: “There are going to be good times and bad times, but lighten up.” It’s worth a try!

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY #60: Corey Hirsch and the ICBA Team
For the past several months, Corey Hirsch has been ICBA’s Wellness Ambassador, and we’ve taken him to nearly two dozen speaking gigs across B.C., including many of our amazing members – companies like Jacob Bros, Hall Constructors, Tybo, and Robertson Walls and Ceilings.
Last week, we finally got to bring him in to share his presentation with our full team! More than 50 ICBA staff came together for our Quarterly Townhall and heard from the former Vancouver Canucks goaltender and mental health advocate, who spoke passionately and emotionally about mental wellness.
We are so proud of Corey’s efforts in sharing his personal struggles with mental health throughout his professional hockey career. With ICBA Wellness, he has reinforced our message of the importance of starting conversations and breaking down the stigma around mental health, addiction and suicide.
At ICBA, we are committed to reaching out to our +250,000 industry colleagues who go to work every day on BC construction sites, so together, we can provide those of us suffering in silence the help they need to recover and get better. And we must continue this work: a recent report out of Ontario found that construction workers constituted 30 per cent of those people who died of drug overdoses in 2020 – a number similar to previous to BC studies.
Thanks to Corey for being vulnerable with us and leading by example on this critical issue for our industry. (Corey also visited Kelowna last week for an ICBA members’ breakfast, and the Kelowna Capital News had a great story on the event HERE.)
