ICBA to Kahlon: Bring Back the Major Projects Inventory

For 22 years, the B.C. Major Projects Inventory tracked every project in the province worth $15 million or more, updated every quarter. This week the Ministry of Jobs and Economic Growth confirmed it is done. No more reports, not even Q4 2025. The reason: "the government's assessment of priorities and resources."

"Every successful business, organization, charity and association on earth keeps its pipeline of opportunities front and centre," ICBA President and CEO Chris Gardner writes. "Our members plan around it, and they deserve the same tool every well-run business relies on."

Contractors use the MPI to decide where to bid, where to open a branch, and how many workers and apprentices to bring on. ICBA Chief Economist Jock Finlayson built the Winter 2026 B.C. Construction Monitor on it: $385 billion in the inventory, $176 billion under construction. Kill the MPI and no one can update those numbers.

The timing is the worst part. The same week Ottawa asked global investors for $1 trillion, B.C. cancelled the one public number that shows how much is being built here. "Investors do not write cheques to 'trust us,'" Gardner writes. "Every other jurisdiction chasing that capital can show its pipeline. B.C. just stopped counting."

ICBA is asking the ministry to restore the MPI and publish the missed quarters, put it in policy so it cannot be quietly dropped again, and work with industry if resources are the problem.
