Energy Independence Just Got Ten Court Files | Coffee & Construction #48

One customer buys almost every barrel of oil Canada exports — and he just put 50 per cent tariffs on our steel. Pacific Link is the pipeline that would finally get Alberta oil to tidewater without running through Washington. This week, ten First Nations court challenges landed on it. Consultation matters. It can't take five years.

Episode 48 of ICBA Coffee & Construction — the news that matters to the people who build British Columbia and Alberta, with ICBA's Jordan Bateman. On today's show:

☕ THE BIG ONE: Nine B.C. First Nations file eight Federal Court applications to quash Ottawa's national-interest designation of Pacific Link — 1,200 km, up to a MILLION barrels a day, Bruderheim to Roberts Bank. Add Cold Lake and that's ten court files. Ottawa says it consulted 110 communities and put 10% Indigenous equity on the table. Good. But Trans Mountain went from $5.4 billion to $34 billion running the consult-sue-repeat play. Consultation is a step, not a parking brake.

🛢️ Major Projects Office boss Dawn Farrell to a joint Senate-Commons committee: 18 projects, 6 at final investment decision, maybe 12 make it. Nobody would price Pacific Link — Ottawa says $35–44 BILLION, Scotiabank says maybe $65 billion. Her biggest barrier? Doubt Canada can deliver "well, right, and once."

🚧 WHERE THE WORK IS: Seaspan hands Algoma Steel a $182 MILLION contract for 24,000 tonnes of Canadian polar-class plate — up to six Coast Guard icebreakers, all built in North Vancouver. Kamloops breaks ground on the $168 million Dufferin arena multiplex (three NHL rinks, open 2030). Alberta opens a $25 million flood-and-drought grant intake — companies can apply this round, deadline Dec. 21.

👷 Federal NDP wants union-only deals on everything Ottawa funds. Their proof: a union-funded study that never measured productivity. The real number: the Pattullo Bridge, $967 million to $1.6 BILLION and three years late under the BC NDP's union-only deal. Union-only shuts out 85% of B.C.'s construction workforce.

💸 Your pension just bought into Kitimat: Blackstone, CPP Investments, OMERS, IMCO and PSP take 49.9% of Mitsubishi's LNG Canada holding company for US$3.1 billion (C$4.3 BILLION) — five weeks after the Phase 2 final investment decision.

🗳️ B.C.'s day one is Nov. 20: MLAs sworn in Nov. 19, Lorne Doerkson and cabinet Nov. 20. Dimitri Pantazopoulos named chief of staff. The caucus marching orders: no new taxes, PST exemptions for small business, housing decisions back to communities, DRIPA repeal as soon as possible. Surrey council sits Nov. 9 with a 60-DAY building permit guarantee on the agenda — miss the deadline, fees waived.

🇺🇸 Democrats took the House and Senate. Carney says the Americans are "asking less and offering more" — but there's still no steel deal, and the 50% tariff is still dated Jan. 1.
