WELLNESS WEDNESDAY #32: Thank You, Corey Hirsch

Each week, ICBA’s Jordan Bateman reflects on what we’ve learned as we participate in ICBA’s Workplace Wellness Program. This program is free for all ICBA members – check out icba.ca/wellness for details.

This Friday, ICBA launches a six-city speaking tour with Corey Hirsch, our ICBA Wellness ambassador for 2022. (Yes, we’re following all B.C. COVID-19 protocols and rules.) Corey also provides content for our ICBA Wellness program.

Having gotten to know Corey a bit over the past few months, he’s a remarkable guy. Honest, kind, funny, and generous with his time. I’ve seen him in a boardroom with tough-as-nails business owners, chatting away, until these owners are spilling their guts about their own mental health challenges. There’s something about Corey that draws these conversations into the light in a gentle, authentic way.

If you don’t know his story, Corey is a former NHL goaltender, coach and an Olympic Games silver medalist. But most importantly, he opened a conversation to end the stigma around mental health, especially among athletes and young men.

In 1994, just three years after being drafted by the New York Rangers, Corey both won a silver medal and drank from the Stanley Cup as a member of the Rangers’ championship team. What no one knew was that Corey tried to take his own life that same year.

Months later, he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks and went on to play 100 more NHL games, before finishing his career in Europe. The entire time, he struggled with his mental health issues. When he could no longer play due to debilitating panic attacks and severe weight loss, he finally reached out to his team trainer. Corey was eventually diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder and got the lifesaving treatment that he needed.

Corey would go on to coach goaltenders with the Maple Leafs and Blues, before joining Sportsnet Radio to do colour commentary for the Canucks.

In February 2017, Corey wrote a piece for The Players’ Tribune, sharing publicly his mental health diagnosis and suicide attempt. His story sparked important conversations within hockey and beyond, as more athletes began to open up about mental health.

Today, Corey is an advocate in the battle to end the stigma around mental health. He is an engaging speaker that educates, motivates, and inspires his audience. He gives hope to others struggling by showing vulnerability and letting people know they are not alone.

If you get a chance, come hear Corey speak at an upcoming ICBA event. Or try his outstanding Blindsided podcast. It’s worth your time.

In response to moisture penetration problems in residential construction, some jurisdictions have mandated the adoption of rainscreen wall systems. These systems aren’t new, but they are evolving—sometimes resulting in confusion about what “rainscreen” means or how it relates to wall performance.

In this seminar, Graham Finch of RDH Building Science will provide an overview of rainscreen wall designs, including all the visible and hidden components and important factors in performance. He will review the underlying concepts of providing a capillary break and allowing drainage of water immediately behind the cladding. Then, diving deeper, he will touch on claddings and attachments, the air cavity and why width matters, water control, structural considerations, fire and combustibility, exterior insulation, onsite quality control, and more.

You’ll learn how to:
• Describe the components of a rainscreen wall and their functions.
• Integrate the science and practical construction aspects of rainscreen wall performance.
• Discuss specific considerations for heat, air, and moisture control as well as structure and fire.
• Build higher performance rainscreen walls.

This seminar will be of interest to a wide audience within the building industry, in particular builders and contractors, cladding installers, architects, designers, and material suppliers who are interested in the design and construction of rainscreen walls across North America.

Presenter: Graham Finch, MASc, P.Eng. – Principal, Senior Building Science Specialist, RDH Building Science, Victoria, BC
Graham is a Building Science Engineer working from RDH Building Science’s Victoria, BC office on projects across North America and internationally. He specializes in enclosure design, research, and investigation work for new and existing buildings. Graham is regarded as an industry leader in evaluating thermal energy and hygrothermal (heat, air, and moisture) performance of building enclosures. His research has resulted in several publications and practical recommendations for the construction industry for rainscreen wall designs. Graham is also the co-chair of the Rainscreen Performance Committee for the Rainscreen Association in North America, RAiNA.

GORD STEWART AWARD: IRL Construction Wins ICBA’s Top Safety Award

SURREY – IRL Construction’s new intelligent illumination safety system has cast a new light on worker safety in B.C., earning IRL Construction (www.irlgroup.ca) the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association’s (ICBA) 2021 Gord Stewart Workplace Health and Safety Innovation Award.

IRL partnered with a UK-based company called FHOSS to install intelligent lighting on several pieces of equipment, including the:

  • FHOSS Halo Exclusion Zone (a lit-up box that keeps people clear of moving equipment),
  • FHOSS Light Livery (lit, impactful and reflective graphics on the outside of working equipment), and
  • FHOSS Halo Lights (which attach to hard hats, making workers even more visible).

“As a company, we wanted to take extra steps to ensure workplace safety, especially around heavy equipment,” said IRL Construction CEO William Donnellan. “We find the exclusion zone is especially helpful for new workers who may not be aware of the appropriate distances to work safely – and it serves as a reminder for even our most seasoned workers.”

“IRL’s lighting innovation is exactly the kind of idea aimed at making the workplace safe that we want to honour with our Award,” said ICBA president Chris Gardner. “Every day, 250,000 men and women go to work on a construction site in B.C., and our number one priority as an industry is to make sure every single one of them gets home safely. IRL’s leadership in using illumination to better identify danger zones helps keep workers safe.”

Awarded in partnership with WorkSafeBC and named for former ICBA president Gord Stewart, ICBA’s Workplace Health and Safety Innovation Award is presented annually to individuals and companies for campaigns and innovations aimed at preventing workplace incidents, injuries and illnesses. By honouring safety leaders and sharing their ideas, ICBA and WorkSafeBC hope to encourage new programs, policies, and projects that improve the health and safety of workers.

The award recognizes an employee or team of employees who come up with an innovative program, policy, tool or project that demonstrates a proven accomplishment in the area of health and safety for the construction industry sector. The award comes with a $5,000 prize, co-funded by ICBA and WorkSafeBC.

#BCPOLI HOTSTOVE: Fees for Information, Fees for Hospital Parking & Leadership Campaign Day 300

Our Jordan Bateman and TheOrca.ca editor-in-chief Maclean Kay discuss the NDP Government’s too-late plan to have an FOI review committee; Adrian Dix bringing back hospital parking fees; the unaffordable feedback loop of interest rates and inflation, and day 300!!!!! of the BC Liberal leadership campaign.

Plus Packers co-owner Jordan guts all of Samuel Oliphant’s silly anti-Green Bay rhetoric.

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY #33: Breakfast with Hirschy

Each week, ICBA’s Jordan Bateman reflects on what we’ve learned as we participate in ICBA’s Workplace Wellness Program. This program is free for all ICBA members – check out icba.ca/wellness for details.

Last Friday morning in Surrey, ICBA held our first Wellness in Construction breakfast on a a six-city speaking tour with Corey Hirsch, our ICBA Wellness ambassador for 2022. (Yes, we’re following all B.C. COVID-19 protocols and rules – in Surrey, we had 65 people in a room for 200.)

Special thanks to Surerus Pipeline and Pacific Blue Cross for stepping up and co-sponsoring this tour.

In Wellness Wednesday #32, I mentioned how impressed I’ve been with Corey’ authenticity, gentle spirit and ability to get folks to open up about mental health. This breakfast showcased all those skills.

Corey had the room laughing at various points, and completely silent at others, hanging on every word of his story. His self-depreciation and honesty made it easy for listeners to connect to him; it would begin to get heavy and he would gently lighten the mood with a quick quip, usually at his own expense.

It was meaningful, but not overwhelming. Standing near him before and after the event, I watched several guests come and share their stories. He gave each of them his time and full attention, gently asking questions without being invasive and encouraging them on their own mental health journeys.

At the event, co-sponsor Pacific Blue Cross handed out a card with some worrying stats, including that 53% of British Columbians feel more lonely since the pandemic began, and that 50% believe it is difficult to access mental health statistics:

It doesn’t have to be that way – there are people who want to help. Friends, family, benefit plans’ employee assistance programs, medical professionals, and others. Please, please don’t think you’re alone in this.
