DEVELOP YOUR PEOPLE

Training, professional development, apprenticeship, and recruitment programs to help you build your open shop team.

ICBA is the Construction Industry’s Leader in Developing Workers

When it comes to developing workers, no association does as much as ICBA – from newcomers looking for the basics like Occupational First Aid, to apprentices looking to get their Red Seal accreditation, to experienced workers looking to take the next step in their careers, to office and management types looking for every skill they need to grow their companies. ICBA has professional development and training offerings for everyone involved in your company.

Our Training team is constantly refining our professional development course offerings to include the latest trends in construction. ICBA will even customize our courses for your specific needs, and deliver them on-site directly to your workers. Many ICBA Training courses offer Gold Seal credits and BC Housing continuing professional development credits, allowing your workers to hold on to their necessary professional accreditation.

ICBA is the single largest sponsor of apprentices in BC, managing more than 1,400 on behalf of our member companies. We can help you manage your apprentices too.

Put simply: when it comes to training, no association can match the expertise and experience of ICBA.

The variety they offer coupled with the ease of access make them a remarkable partner indeed! What’s more, their staff are always delightful and easy to work with.

Professional Development Courses

We customize courses to meet your needs and also offer online courses to make it as convenient as possible for construction and other industry workers to improve their skills. Our courses are recognized by various accrediting bodies, both provincially and nationally. ICBA Training delivers top-notch training for individual companies.

Apprenticeship Management

It’s not just current construction workers that ICBA invests in. We sponsor more apprentices than any other group in BC – the future of construction. ICBA manages the paperwork on behalf of our member companies, ensuring they can stay focused on building their business while training BC’s next generation of workers. And, through our Building Stronger Futures initiative, we provide bursaries to young workers making their way toward red seal accreditation.

ICBA trains thousands of workers every year, on everything from Excel Spreadsheets to Excavating Trenches; from Personal Leadership Skills to Construction Estimating; from Fall Protection to Effective Management Skills – plus 580 other courses.

Building Stronger Futures

Our ICBA members build the infrastructure and homes of our communities, and ICBA helps build the future of our industry.

Our Building Stronger Futures initiative helps young people and those in need by funding scholarships and offering grants for trades and technical education programs. In 2022, ICBA handed out nearly $200,000 in grants to open shop apprentices.

Funded by the ICBA Open golf tournament and a portion of our other revenue, Building Stronger Futures is making a difference in the lives of many people. ICBA also contributes to a number of charitable causes.

To build on the ideas that underpin ICBA, our community endowed the Philip Hochstein Fellowship, named in honour of ICBA’s former president. The Fellowship recognizes an SFU Beedie School of Business faculty member who has achieved significant success in the study and research of free trade, open markets, and economic growth.

Both myself and our organization have benefited greatly from the training opportunities provided by ICBA. I am continually amazed by the vastness of their course catalog and that if they do not have the training that we are looking for ICBA will always try to find something that fits our needs.

ICBA's HR Toolkit

You’re a builder, not a human resources professional. But it’s important to protect yourself, your company and your team by having solid human resources policies – geared to the construction industry.

That’s why ICBA put together our HR Toolkit, a collection of policies and other templates that ICBA members can take and customize for their companies. Instead of paying an HR firm thousands of dollars to develop these same materials for you, ICBA members get access to the whole toolkit for free.

Wage and Benefit Survey

In the competition for talent, it’s important that you have the best information possible on industry wages and benefit plans. Every year, we survey our members to understand trends in the construction sector in everything from work volumes, project approvals, availability of skilled workers, and compensation. This valuable information is free for ICBA members to access.

I have been a recipient of the ICBA bursary throughout my apprenticeship and I just want to share my thanks. I have now completed my electrical apprenticeship with Kimco Controls in Kelowna and am grateful for the financial support the ICBA has provided me with. Thank you very much! Incentives like these have made a huge difference in me progressing through my career and I’m sure many others feel the same.
